“They say they never really miss you til you dead or you gone, but on that note Im leaving after this song…”
Not likely. Although Jay frequently talks about retiring, I dont think there will be a day when he puts down the mic for good and quite frankly, I dont think he should. There is a major void in hip-hop, so much that we thinking the little kid from Degrassi is the second coming of (insert any dope rapper). There are very few rappers with substance. Rappers that possess that “stuff” that renders you speechless when you hear a track and all you can do is nod you head & turn the music up. *cue any Reasonable Doubt song* When you strip away all the extras, the beat, the auto-tune, the extra niggas on stage, the videos & the hoes, its all about the lyrics.
Lil Wayne and Drake dont have that ability. They are not dope to me. Lil Wayne is okay. Just okay. Half the time hes inaudible so I dont know how he can be dope when you cant understand what he’s saying. Also, making words rhyme does not make you a great rapper. Im so tired of people putting steam behing rappers because their words rhyme. If thats the case, everybody in the 2nd grade should be hip-hop stars. Sometimes he say some cool shit but lets not over do it. Thats the same for Drake. I heard the freestyle. Me personally, Im not impressed. If he wasnt talking about weed & drinking (by the way he doesnt smoke or drink) or girls, he was saying “Yo” every 8 bars. Spare me.
Hip Hop/Rap is more than about the beat and the catchy hook. Its the lyrics. The wordplay is the essence of the art form and I feel we’ve lost sight of that. Now, dont let me be misunderstood. Im not saying Jay-Z is the be all and end all of hip-hop. There’s a plethora of MC’s that dont get radio time that are dope as hell but because they dont base their careers on money, cars, clothes & hoes, they dont get the spins (you see what I just did there lol).
But hopefully, Jay can bless our ears once again. He recently announced that he’s finally releasing the greatly anticipated BluePrint 3, same date as The Blueprint back in 2001. However, 50 cent is releasing his Before I Self Destruct on the same day. Hmmm.
You all know I dont mince words and I wont start now. I dont like 50. He USED to be dope. I think those 9 bullets stimulated his lyrical content but after the Get Rich of Die Trying album, hes been singing on rap songs ever since. The thrill is gone. He’s wack. He has nothing to talk about anymore so now he just picks on other rappers. Poor Ja-Rule, 50 just came right in and stole his whole style. All 50 does is sing and if this album is anything like that “Yeah, Okay, Alrite” song, im not interested. Before you self destruct? Too late. Go sell vitamin water homie. Its not in your blood anymore. You treat your last like your first and the thirst should be the same as the day you came…. aaaaand its not. I dont even view 50 dropping on the same day as a challenge because I know that 50 wont bring it like he used to. Hes not concerned. This wont be a monumental moment in hip-hop so dont get your hopes up.
I highly recommend you buy both albums though. Lets support our artists… and thats dopeshit.
